Cold cracking of crude oil
In petrochemistry, petroleum geology and organic chemistry, cracking is the process whereby complex organic molecules such as kerogens or long-chain hydrocarbons are broken down into simpler molecules such as light hydrocarbons, by the breaking of carbon -carbon bonds in the precursors. Thermal cracking is a process in which hydrocarbons such as crude oil are subjected to high heat and temperature to break the molecular bonds and reduce the molecular weight of the substance being cracked. This process is used to extract usable components, known as fractions, which are released during the cracking process. Upgrading heavy oil and bitumen is achieved via PetroBeam electron beam processing "cold cracking" and "e-beam" technology. The patent-pending proprietary process uses high-energy electrons to transform the thickest part of crude oil into lighter, more valuable gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Crude oil is a finite resource. Petrol and other fuels are produced from it using fractional distillation. Cracking is used to convert long alkanes into shorter, more useful hydrocarbons. A process for reducing asphaltene content of crude oil and oil-containing materials to improve rheological properties of crude oils enhancing the water-extractabilities of sulphur and metals contained in them. The process employs the cold cracking effect of a binary acid solution containing, preferably, hydrochloric acid and oleic acid. Method to enhance the recovery of oil from an oil field, comprising: applying heat to a colloidal hydrocarbonic medium that comprises hydrocarbon chains; and applying pressure waves having a predetermined frequency and intensity to hydrocarbon chains, in order to crack hydrocarbon chains into relatively shorter hydrocarbon chains. Main Difference – Fractional Distillation vs Cracking. A petroleum refinery is a process of chemical engineering in which natural crude oil is processed to obtain useful products. A petroleum refinery unit can be defined as a large factory complex.
Cold cracking, he added, is an alternative way of refining petroleum -- breaking long chains of hydrocarbons into shorter ones -- by irradiating it, much as food or medical equipment can be
• For “cold cracking”, it would be anticipated that refinery streams currently sent to a fluidized catalytic cracker (FCC) unit would be treated, and not the entire crude oil stream since irradiating short hydrocarbon molecules tends to polymerize molecules and form higher molecular weight, lower value fuels. Cold Cracking Our unique and unrivaled nanomaterials facilitate concurrent “cold-cracking” and desulphurization of extra-heavy crude and fuel oil (in operating environments of less than 90 degrees celsius). Cold cracking, he added, is an alternative way of refining petroleum -- breaking long chains of hydrocarbons into shorter ones -- by irradiating it, much as food or medical equipment can be The lighter oil in the two jars to the right, has an API of 10.8. Viscosity of the crude oil was 20,000 cps, and dropped 10 fold to 2,000 cps with the addition of 10% of the chemical. What is fractional distillation? How does it work Why is crude oil both important and useless? What is cracking? What is supply and demand? Why do long hydrocarbons have higher boiling points? Modern living is built on crude oil - this hub explains how crude oil is changed into the things we use everyday, from petrol to plastic! Thermal cracking is a process in which hydrocarbons such as crude oil are subjected to high heat and temperature to break the molecular bonds and reduce the molecular weight of the substance being cracked. This process is used to extract usable components, known as fractions, which are released during the cracking process. Thermal cracking produces shorter straight chain alkanes from longer straight chains found in gas oils or other crude oil fractions. Free radicals (reactive species with unpaired electrons, but no electronic charge) are the active species that govern thermal cracking reactions.
